Insurance Renewal Coming Up? 7 Things to Check Before You Pay
A renewal notice often arrives with a new price and a deadline. Before you simply pay it, take ten minutes to check the items below. A small change in your situation, or in the policy itself, can make a real difference.
Why your price may change
A renewal price can change for reasons that have nothing to do with a claim. Common ones include a change in your own details (a new vehicle, a new address, more employees), higher repair or medical costs in your area, and the insurer changing its rates across a state or region. Losing a discount you used to have can also raise the price.
The 7-point checklist
- Compare the new price with last year’s. If it changed, ask why. You are entitled to ask.
- Check the coverage limits. Have your business, your property or your family grown since you set them?
- Check the deductibles. Could you comfortably pay that amount out of pocket if you had a claim?
- Confirm the details are correct. Addresses, vehicles, drivers, employees, annual mileage or revenue. Wrong details can cause problems at claim time.
- Look for discounts. Ask which discounts apply to you and whether they are on the renewal.
- Read the changes. New fees, new terms or new exclusions are often listed in the renewal documents. Read them before you pay.
- Mark the end date. If you switch insurers, make the new policy start on the day the old one ends, so there is no gap in coverage.
When to start
Do not wait for the last week. Several weeks before the renewal date is a good time to review the policy and, if you want to, compare your options with the same coverage so the numbers are comparable. Waiting until the last day leaves you with fewer choices.
A simple way not to miss it
Write down your renewal date for each policy, or share it with your agent. At Jahani Insurance Agency you can include your renewal date when you request a quote, and I will follow up before it arrives.
